PR POSITIVES IN 2012

As budgets constrict and belts continue to tighten, many PR professionals are forecasting a grim 2012 for themselves. There is a feeling that businesses will slash their PR budgets to save money during lean times. However, there are those who do not see things this way. In fact, there are still plenty of positives for publicity in 2012.

First off, public relations is still very relevant. Whatever line of work you are in, from musician to salesman, counselor or entrepreneur, you need to be seen. Your audience, clients, customers, public or fans are still your target. Public perception is important whether you are the President, Oprah Winfrey, or Bill Gates. Your ‘brand’ may be your product, your company or yourself, whichever way you look at it; you need to engage your audience with your brand. With advertising being more expensive and less influential, it seems that PR is set to lead the way.

This doesn’t mean the market won’t become more competitive. You will need to be able to adapt to shifting trends shown through social networks like Twitter, while staying relevant and cost-effective. Some traditional PR companies may find times do get harder. However, those who can adapt will stay ahead as the day of the up-front and expensive advertising campaign begins to prove a daunting financial commitment for many businesses. A publicist should be able to adapt to changes in perception quickly, and so should thrive in 2012′s unpredictable climate.

While any professional would recommend some solid advice, it is also a good time to take control of your own brand. With the growth of a technology-savvy world, people are more aware of the reach of the media and how they can influence it. People can now use professional tools to handle their own press release distribution and creation, taking ownership of their brand direction and saving money too.

As with any business, there are those who forecast negativity and decline, but there are plenty of others who see nothing but a new opportunity…
